Many councils these days sell bags of 'compost' at their recycling centres. Struggling to meet strict recycling targets, they have household green waste hot composted. This is done in bulk by specialist companies at high temperature.
The result is not really compost. If you look at the bags it will say 'soil improver'. This substance does not have the same levels of microbial activity as home made compost, or the compost you buy from garden centres. It is more or less inert. Do not try and grow vegetables in it. This substance is best used to add structure to soil, but does not contain many nutrients.
